Joseph Jamnik

Hello! My name is Joseph and I’m really excited for this upcoming year (my first year as NSGSA President)! As president, I’m responsible for overseeing all the workings of the NSGSA. I’m currently entering my 3rd year as a PhD student in Dr. Ahmed El-Sohemy’s lab where we’re primarily interested in gene-diet interactions (or nutrigenomics). A lot of my work deals with proteomics and various genome-wide analyses that aim to identify novel variants that mediate individuals’ responses to certain dietary factors. You can usually find me in FG 310 – so feel free to drop by or send me an email about anything NSGSA-related!

Vice President
Vivian Choo

Hi Everyone! My name is Vivian and I am honoured and excited to have the opportunity to be the Vice President for this year's council!  I am a second year Master's student with Dr. Jenkins and Dr. Sievenpiper, investigating the role of fructose containing sugars on glycemic control.  Outside of the lab, I enjoy spending time outdoors, teaching and practising yoga, and experimenting with healthy recipes.  Feel free to contact me or any members of our team if you have any questions or suggestions.  We would love to hear from you and look forward to meeting you at our events!

Luke Johnston

Howdy! I'm the Treasurer for NSGSA. In essence, I control all the money and spend it how I want. Muhahahah... Kidding... (but am i?)... Anywho, I am a PhD student with Dr. Hanley, starting my third year. I completed my MSc with Tony Hanley and loved the work so much I continued on with him. I work with data from a longitudinal cohort, investigating the role of serum fatty acids on the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. It's kinda geeky, but I really like statistics, programming, and coding.

Secretary & Webmaster
Zhila Semnani-Azad

Hi there! My name is Zhila and I am this year's NSGSA secretary and webmaster! Make sure you check out this website for updates on exciting events and important news throughout the year! I am a Master's student with Dr. Anthony Hanley and my research focuses on analyzing the predictability of a novel biomarker of adipose tissue macrophage activation in the development of type 2 diabetes. Apart from research, I love to travel, cook, sketch, and do photography!

Faculty of Medicine Rep
Andreea Zurbau

Hi! I'm Andreea and I am this year's Faculty of Medicine Social Rep! You'll be receiving invites for me for all of the
interdepartmental events where you can mingle and network with students and faculty outside of the Nutritional Sciences department! I'm a second year PhD student, supervised by Dr. Vlad Vuksan, researching a poly-dietary therapy for management of cardiovascular disease risk in type 2 diabetes. Looking forward to seeing you at our events!

Catherine Braunstein

Hello! I’m your CUPE Representative this year, which means I’m your direct link to all information relevant to you that comes from the Union. I’m a first year master’s student with Dr. John Sievenpiper studying the catalytic effects of fructose and allulose on post-prandial carbohydrate metabolism. Last year, I worked on a 4th year independent research project with Dr. Sievenpiper studying the effect of low glycemic index diets on body weight and decided to continue working with him for my master’s project. I’m very excited to work with the NSGSA this year and please feel free to contact me with any questions you have about the Union!

First Year Rep
Olivia Moran

Hi everyone, my name is Olivia and I am very excited to be a part of the NSGSA! I am a first-year MSc student under the supervision of Dr. Joanne Kotsopoulos at Women’s College Hospital. I started working with her during my undergrad, and I enjoyed it so much that grad school was a no-brainer for me. Apart from school, my interests include swimming, volunteering, trying to be graceful in yoga class (it’s not going very well), and knitting super cute animals (@Twincraftsknit). If you need help with anything — questions, concerns, or Songza playlist recommendations, you know, the usual — do not hesitate to let me know! You can reach me at olivia.moran@mail.utoronto.ca or at seminar!

Hospital Rep
Eszter Gereb

Hello! I’m Eszter and I am thrilled to be one of the Hospital Reps for the NSGSA this year! I am a second year Master’s student under the co-supervision of Dr. Joanne Kotsopoulos and Dr. Young-In Kim based at St. Michael’s Hospital. My research focuses on the effects of folic acid supplementation on the chemosensitivity of human breast cancer cells in vitro. My hobbies include cooking, baking, reading and hiking. I am very excited to be on this year’s exec and should you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me!

Hospital Rep
Shana Kim

Hey! Glad to be one of the new Hospital Reps on the NSGSA for the 2015-2016 academic year. Eszter and I will act as a link for hospital-based students to the DNS. We’ll also do our best to keep hospital-based students in the loop with all the great things and events going on in the department. I am currently an MSc student working with Dr. Joanne Kotsopoulos at Women’s College Hospital doing epidemiological work investigating the effects of folate and other B vitamins on breast cancer incidence in a high-risk population. When I’m not crunching numbers, I like making music, binge-watching terrible TV, and eating cheese.

Social Rep
Ingrid Santaren

Hey! I am one of the social reps and I expect to see most of you at our very exciting and fun social events. I’m a 2nd year PhD student researching the association between dairy fatty acids and type 2 diabetes in a longitudinal cohort.

Social Rep
Robin Glicksman

Hey everyone! I'm so excited to be one of your NSGSA social reps this year! I can't wait to start planning all of the exiting things we'll get up to. I am a MSc student in my second year of studies under the supervision of Dr. Anthony Hanley. I am currently researching anti-inflammatory diet patterns using a novel approach- partial least squares analysis. I love music, travel and reading. Can't wait to meet you all this year!

Community Outreach Rep
Rodney Au-Yeung

Hi! Community Outreach Rep here, 1 of 2 actually! My job is to outreach and represent. My co-rep will be doing the job of community-ing. We collaborate with different student and healthcare groups to raise awareness in the community. Bake sales and volunteer events (Ronald McDonald House, Royal Agricultural Fair) are just some things we do! Look forward to our events, they are always bursting with fun! I’m a 2nd year MSc student in clinical research investigating acute effects of dietary fibre on appetite and energy intake. In my spare time, I play lots of board games. Yes, I know Settlers of Catan!
